William was the owner of a construction firm. Twenty years ago, he came from an orphanage, was cheated by the local authorities, and instead of an apartment they gave him a room in a communal apartment. And even in a dilapidated house. At first he was sad. The roof was leaking, there was only one toilet for three families. But then he thought about it and decided. It could be worse. A friend of mine was left on the street.
He went to get a job at the construction market. They hired him without much willpower. Orphans were not to be trusted. He worked diligently, went into all details, and after six months he was appointed a senior salesman. He lived modestly, saving his salary. He had a dream to buy an apartment, albeit a small one, but a separate one. The other boys would go dancing or out in the evening, and he’d go home.
One day a woman came into his store. She asked him to help her pick out some wallpaper for her room. William helped her make a selection, packed it up, and walked her to the register.
– Help carry it to the car, the woman asked.
William responded to the customer’s request. When they approached the car he noticed a small haired girl with a bright-red mop of hair on the front passenger seat. And she so captivated him that he stood like a man on foot, forgot about where and why he went.
He came to his senses laughing voice of the buyer.
– Give me that wallpaper, chevalier. Go to your workplace. William from that day on walked like a dumbfounded man. He had not eaten much before, and now he could not even eat a bite in his throat. He couldn’t get the red-haired beauty out of his mind.
Five years had passed. He gave up the dream of an apartment. But instead he rented a small store and began to sell plumbing fixtures. He was doing well. He was making money. But he continued to live in his little room in the communal apartment. And he still didn’t go anywhere. He’d come home from work, lie down on the couch and dream of his Goldilocks.
And then one day he met her in the store, in the dairy department. She was not alone. Next to her was a little boy of three. He was as redheaded as she was. Her brother thought to William, but at that moment the little boy pulled the girl by the hand and whimpered.
– Mommy buy a chocolate bar.
Why is everything like this, why is he so unlucky, walking home reasoned William. He had dreamed of meeting this girl for five years. And when he met her he could not approach her. Life is unlikely to give him another chance, and whether she needed it, she had a child and most likely a husband. So he walked without knowing the road.
Suddenly he saw his redheaded dream standing at a crosswalk, literally two steps away. He had already dreamed that now at least a glimpse of her, when suddenly he saw a car, with breakneck speed flying straight at her. Without hesitation, he pushed the girl away, she clumsily waving her arms fell on the pavement. But William himself did not have time to make a saving step, the car hit him and he like a ball flew into the air and with all the swing flew into the windshield.
He woke up on a hospital bed. Next to him, with his redhead in his arms, was his dream. She raised her head and was very sweet, with a sleepy face. She saw that he opened his eyes, and ran into the corridor with shouts -doctor, he woke up. William found out that he had been unconscious for two weeks, and all that time the girl had been sitting next to him.
The girl went to William every day, bringing him homemade broth and steamed cutlets. He found out all about her. That her mother had given her in marriage against her will, that she had divorced her husband and lived alone with her son. And finally he mustered up the courage to admit that he had been in love with her for a long time.
